Which ebook reader is best?

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

I love to read fiction and have couple of pdf, txt and .lit files. In which ebook reader can I use this files? I wish to have this ebook reader for atleast 3 to 5 years and not willing to upgrade.

The Kindle DX is the best. It can handle PDF and LIT files natively, and it is the latest ebook reader released by Amazon. You can read these thorough review about it:

For LIT file, there is no ebook reader right now that can support it natively. However, I think you can convert it to PDF using some free tools like this one, before reading on ebook readers:

Hope this helps you decide.

Saving your place in a pdf ebook?

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

I’m looking for a pdf reader like adobe reader that will actually allow you to save your place. I haven’t found a way to do this with Adobe Reader and think there must be some open-source pdf reader out that that will let you do this, but I am not having any luck searching. Also in your answer, please include how that program allows you to save your spot so when you open it back up, you can quickly navigate to your bookmarked page.

you can save your place in a book with Adobe Reader by going to Edit->Preferences->Documents then check the first box that says "Restore last view settings when reopening documents"

Is there an ebook reader software that mimics e-ink (black on grey) to reduce eye strain with long documents?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

I have a tablet PC and I read a lot of books in PDF format, but I find that it strains my eyes. I’ve seen the kindle, and I like how you can read black on grey to reduce fatigue. I was looking around for a PDF reading software that can do something similar. I understand that it’s a special screen on the kindle that does that, but software that can change the background color of the pdf I am reading would work just as well for me. I’ve done some searching and all I can find is reviews about Kindle and Sony’s Reader. Has anyone heard of a PDF reader I can download that is better on eye strain?
I’ve already tried Google. Yahoo answers is a last resort. The only thing that comes up on Google is product reviews for the Kindle or Sony reader.

Search for it on Google or YouTube

They give excellent results

Hope I helped

Cheers!

ebook reader suitable for children’s books?

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

I’ve found several sites with quality children’s literature available in free ebook formats. Is there a reasonably priced ebook reader that accepts .pdf’s & .jpg’s and would display pages of a picture book as they would normally appear in the real book? I don’t need any fancy features like 3G or wi-fi or even a touch screen, just color display and acceptance of common formats found on free ebook sites. (I hate the thought of printing all of this stuff out and binding it.)

If you want color display, then you need to get a PDA or netbook. However, I’ll say color LCD screen is not good for reading as it is backlit, and it will hurt your children’s eye for long term.

If you can accept non-color screen, I’ll say the Amazon Kindle is best for children. It has e-ink screen that will not hurt our eyes even for long hours of reading. It has a huge category of children books (where ebooks are sold cheaper than actual books), and you can get free books on the Kindle too:

You can find here for the format of ebooks supported by the Amaozn Kindle, in the section "Files Kindle Recognizes":

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fhelp%2Fcustomer%2Fdisplay.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26nodeId%3D200375630&tag=elec-m-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

Not sure if it helps, but I love my Amazon Kindle 2 very much. I remember I read these reviews about the benefits of the Kindle when I decided to buy it:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=elec-m-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

Finally, in case you don’t know, Amazon has recently put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it is now selling $100 cheaper than the price I got my Kindle, and it adds in international wireless access and native PDF support… So take the chance if you want it.

Hope it helps :)

How do you view an ebook file (pdf) on an LG KP500?

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

I have an LG KP500. I would like to be able to read ebooks on it. But I don’t know how. Do I have to install a software on it? If yes, how?

The specs on it say that the LG KP500 has a built-in picsel viewer for viewing documents like pdf. But if so, does this mean that I can save an ebook pdf file into my memory card, insert the memory card into my phone and then how do I access that? I cannot find an application in my phone which says "ebook reader" or such that will allow me to view the file.

Pls help.

What you need is a pdf reader for your mobile phone. This helpful article ‘Mobile PDF Reader – View PDF on Mobile Devices’ may give you some tips.

How can I keep the page where I was last reading a PDF on Adobe Reader?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

I am reading an eBook on pdf format that is just too long for me to finish in just one sitting. Last time, I just write the page number on a piece of paper. Easy. But being Adobe Reader a software for "reading", it seems silly to me not having some way to keep the page where I was. The so-called "bookmarks" is just a table of contents with links to the pages the editor believed were the most important. That’s fine. But… there is any way I can "bookmark" the pdf myself (on Reader, not Acrobat or so)? Some script or plug-in for Reader, or maybe a third-party solution? I would appreciate not having "format conversion" answers… I want to keep it as pdf. I just want to know if it’s possible to save the page …

In Adobe Reader 7 (it probably works on lower as well), goto the menu bar and click EDIT and then PREFERENCES right at the bottom of the menu. In the left hand pane click on STARTUP.

Click on the drop down at the field labeled REOPEN DOCUMENT TO LAST VIEWED PAGE. Select ALL FILES and click OK. On some older versions it will change the setting right away but sometimes an installer box comes up, installs some stuff and then tells you to restart. If it does then restart.

In Adobe Reader 8 goto EDIT and PREFERENCES. Click DOCUMENTS in the left and pane and check the box marked RESTORE LAST VIEW SETTINGS WHEN REOPENING DOCUMENTS And Click OK.

Now Adobe Reader will remember what the last page is of the documents you open with it.

I am not sure if it will open to the last read page for documents you have opened with adobe reader before the option was enabled.
