Which eBook reader would be able to handle my large pdfs that are mostly full-page images?

May 5th, 2010

I have several books that are around 30MB each. They are primarily full page images. Which eBook reader can handle large pdf’s of this type without freezing/rebooting? Thanks!
I don’t mind scrolling in horizontal view.

The Kindle DX should match what you want. See this article on its ability to handle large complex PDF files:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR3AJNTUT3N59CR%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Frdp%255Fperm&tag=searchresult-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

There is also a good review here about the Kindle DX:

What are the advantages of the Kindle over going to the Library?

May 3rd, 2010

I really want a Kindle but the only thing holding my parent’s back is that they think it is a waste of money to buy an expensive device, then have to also pay for the books too on top of that when you can just get free books from your local library? If you agree with my parent’s, don’t answer. I only want some good reasons to convince them. Thank you.

The Amazon Kindle store offers lots and lots of free books – several thousand, at last count. Most of these are classics, but there are some scifi/fantasy, thriller, romance, and nonfiction titles, too. New free titles appear constantly – just look at the Kindle bestseller list.

There are also TONS of amazing "indie" books out there, mostly priced less than $2.00. I’ve found some really great books for less than a buck that you would NEVER find in a library!

You can do some pretty basic web browsing (google, wikipedia, and the like) and there’s no monthly charge – something you wouldn’t get with, say, and iphone or a netbook.

It might be useful at school – say you need to read "Great Expectations" for a class. With your Kindle, you can highlight and "clip" passages, make your own annotations in the text, and go online to do research. Plus, the book itself is FREE in the Kindle store.

If you’re really into reading (say, you read more than 15-20 books a year) the cost for the Kindle really starts to balance out, as the price for Kindle books is generally much less than the price for a paper book.

Save up your birthday money, do some jobs around the neighborhood, and save up – they’re only $259 now!

What does a new model Kindle do that a cheaper netbook or notebook full computer cant do?

May 1st, 2010

I have never used an Amazon Kindle but looking at their prices I see that they cost as much as some Notebook computers and they are more expensive than a lot of netbooks. What does a Kindle do that a comparable price notebook computer does not do? It seems to me that a cheaper netbook or notebook can do all that a KIndle would do but so much more. Please advise if you have experience with a Kindle.

It is designed for portable reading, just like MP3 or iPod instead of netbook. I own the Kindle 2 and I like it very much. If you like to read, I’ll say it is definitely a must have.

I remember I read these reviews when I decided to buy the Kindle:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Freview%2FR2DUM7S4XW06QN%3Fie%3DUTF8%26ASIN%3DB00154JDAI%26nodeID%3D%26ref%255F%3Dcm%255Fcr%255Fpr%255Fcmt&tag=moreinfo-po-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

There is also a good news from Amazon that they just put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it is now selling $100 cheaper than the price I got my Kindle…

Hope it helps :)

What case will work for my Kindle 2 along with a silicone skin?

April 29th, 2010

I want to use a silicone skin case on Kindle 2 while reading. However, I need more protection when I put it in my purse. Is there another case that will hold Kindle with skin still on it? Preferably not too bulky.
I have decided on the Belkin case…thanks for your suggestions. I can’t wait to get my Kindle 2…it’s for my bday in 2 weeks.

You can choose between these two cases:

Most of the other cases need to have the Kindle naked in order to fit into the case.

I’m a Kindle 2 owner too. I’ve previously bookmarked an article about how to get most out of the Kindle, if you are interested BTW:

Help regarding Ebook reader?

April 28th, 2010

Is it possible to read all types of pdf file with ebook reader (=kindle, sony)

Yes, PDF can be read on Sony reader or Kindle if they are not protected. Personally, I prefer the Amazon Kindle if you want to use it for reading PDF, as it can read PDF both as native or with conversion to Kindle format. After conversion you do something like change font size for the book.

There are some good user reviews and comparison of different models of the Kindle here:

looking to get a ebook reader. but i dont want any of that constant online 3g money hole that the kindle does etcetc.

anyone know of a ebook reader thats cheap. and has pdf support. all i need it to do is show pdfs

Not sure if it helps, but the Amazon Kindle will can read PDF files. See the section "Files Kindle Recognizes" on the official page here and you’ll know what file formats are supported by the Kindle:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fhelp%2Fcustomer%2Fdisplay.html%3Fie%3DUTF8%26nodeId%3D200375630%26ref_%3Dhp%5Fnavbox%5Fk2land%5Ftrans%5Fusb&tag=elec-m-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957

The Kindle is much cheaper now since it got a price slash. And I remember I read these reviews when I decided to get my Kindle 2:

ebook reader meant for PDF ONLY?

April 24th, 2010

I need to find a pdf ebook reader that’s out already… price doesn’t matter…
Should have a large screen, fast, and work AMAZINGLY with pdf, Full Page Continuous, Landscape Continuous, Two Column, Manual Crop Margins, Autocrop Margins, Single Page Reflow, Zoom Images in Reflow, Table of Contents, Hyperlinks, Text Search; Dictionary Lookup, stuff like that, and not just turn each page into an image like the kindle.

I was thinking irex 1000 but i heard it sucks with pdf

I prefer the Amazon Kindle if you want to use it for reading PDF. You can see the ebook formats that the Kindle support in "Files Kindle Recognizes" section here:

Is there a better ebook reader than Amazon Kindle DX for PDF textbook reading? Don’t care about WiFi/3G stuff.?

April 20th, 2010

The Kindle is the best. It uses eInk screen and the screen size is big enough, all for easy reading of textbooks. I’ve mentioned quite a lot about textbooks on the Kindle here:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090720135726AAUiQMG

And here are the textbooks you can find on the Kindle:
